Tips On How To Sketch When Your Fingers Are Shaking
By R. Schmidt

It looks like it's a quite common issue - both amongst expert and younger artists: trembling fingers. My opinion: possibly one half of us all have encountered issues with their arms trembling too seriously for drawing more than once.

Therefore i did this collection of how-to's on how to overcome  shaking fingers or even how to get used to it, if it can't be stopped.

But I must state this first: in case you have shaking fingers often and haven't done so already: go and see a physician!

Frequently shaking fingers tend to be almost nothing a bit more sleep and reducing caffeine can't mend (later on more about that). Nonetheless shaking fingers can also be a symptom of a number of severe health issues that need professional medication.

That said, let's look at several homemade remedies for trembling fingers. Of course it's generally a great idea to live healthier.

First reduce your coffee usage. Plus do the same for any drinks which contain caffeine such as cola.

Next make sure you have enough sleep. Determined by your physical constitution eight hours per day are a good rule of thumb. Additionally a short nap after lunch can work like a charm, too!

I'm certain you do not drink very much alcoholic beverages as this might aggravate your trembling, as well. Only with regard to completeness: drink alcohol very rarely and moderately.

Possibly this is a fairly surprising discovery for you: trembling fingers can be the result of a excessive sugar consumption (frequently in combination with too much caffeine). Therefore replace the sugars with more healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.

Next it will help you if you get more active. This can be frequent exercise sessions as well as becoming a member of the neighborhood sports club and getting lengthier walks.

Also a reduced level of Magnesium might cause muscle tightness resulting in shaking fingers. A indicator is when you have hic-ups or cramps. Therefore ensure that you eat a good amount of vegetables as well as salad everyday so that you have enough magnesium.

Next in case you are under medication this may be a factor, as well. In this case - once again: consult your physician. He may have an idea how to fine-tune your medication to lessen the trembling.

But what if you are unable to minimize the trembling sufficiently in order to sketch without problems?

Then you can certainly apply all these tricks to sketch regardless of trembling fingers:

To start with you'll find in any nicely outfitted art supply store so called drawing 'brigdes' - these are compact bridge shaped shelves made out of wood or acrylic. You place them across your drawing in order to rest your arm and steady your hand. The only downside: you are unable to do those extended and sweeping motions in exchange.

2nd you could cultivate your drawing style in a way so its not necessary to sketch accurate details in great accuracy. So you learn to get a loose more flowing and more forgiving style.

Last but not least it is possible to think about making use of stencils, french curves and rulers.

But most vital: don't become frustrated. Imagine: old Charles M. Schulz (creator of Charlie Brown and Snoopy) had Parkinsons. Nonetheless he managed to adapt and compensate the trembling so he didn't quit drawing his comic strips up to the point he retired (at age 77!).
