Snowy The Snowman
By Roberta Addington

This will make a wonderful scout or class holiday project.

What You Need:

Small Terra Cotta Pot (25 cents at Wal Mart)
Small 2" Styrofoam Ball
3" Styrofoam Ball
Pipe Cleaners (Black)
Black, Red, or Green Paint (Washable)
Red and Green Ribbon
1/2" - 1" bead
Styrofoam Glue
Toothpick

What To Do:

1. Have the children paint the Terra Cotta Pot, this will be the Snowman's hat. Set aside to dry.

2. Cut the chenille stems to approximately 2" lengths, these form the arms of the snowman.

3. Paint a face on the small ball and paint or glue buttons on the larger ball.

4. Push the chenille stems into the larger ball where the arms should be. One on each side. Push the toothpick into the larger ball where the head will be attached. Place glue on the toothpick before inserting it in the body. Push the head of the snowman onto the toothpick, covered in glue. I also like to glue around the toothpick hole where the Styrofoam touches.

5. Tie a 6" length of ribbon around the "neck" of the snowman.

6. Take an 8" piece of ribbon and thread it through the bead. Tie the ends and add a little glue to hold. Slip the ribbon through the inside hole of the pot, which you have painted and should be dry, leaving the bead on the inside as an anchor for the hanger (ribbon).

7. Place the pot on the snowman's head and mark it.

I came up with this project for my group of girl scouts grades K - 4. They did all the work themselves and were very proud to take these home and hang on their trees. My assistant leader and I put the girl's names and the date on the back of the snowmen.
