If you happen to have a papasan chair that doesn't have a cushion or that needs a cushion replacement, you may want to consider replacing the papasan cushion on the chair. However, if you really don't want to spend the money on the replacement, then you may want to consider actually making a cushion of your own. With a few older pillows, some cloth, and a bit of time, you can actually make the papasan cushion that you need. Let's take a look at how it can be done.

Find Some Old Pillows and Cut into Wedges

The first thing that you'll want to do is to make sure that you have some older pillows around your home. If you have pillows that have been beaten up, mashed down, or that have bad cases, then these are great pillows to use. You'll want to take the pillows out of any covering they have and then you will cut them diagonally. This way you'll have wedges of the pillow material to use for the papasan cushion.

Arrange Pillows so They Fit on the Chair

Take the pillow wedges that you have cut and place them on the chair. As you cut them, keep arranging them until you have enough of them to totally cover the chair. Usually you'll find that it takes 8-10 wedges of pillow to cover the entire chair. Then once you figure out how many you need, you'll want to put them down on the floor.

Cut and Sew Your Cloth

Now you are ready to cut and sew your cloth for the papasan pillow. Make sure that you cut the cloth you are using big enough to accommodate all of those pillow wedges that you are going to be using. It's best to cut both pieces of the cloth in a circle at the very same time so you get them the same size. Doing this on the floor is a great idea because it gives you a flat area to work with. Then you'll want to sew the two pieces of cloth together with a good seam, leaving one end open.

Stuff the Pillows into the Case

On the open end of the pillow case that you have sewn together, take the pillow wedges and stuff them into the case. Once you have them in, you'll want to make sure that you arrange them so they will be comfortable as a papasan cushion.

Sew Through the Entire Pillow

Of course you will want to sew up the edges of the pillow, but sewing through the entire pillow around the cushions is an excellent idea. This way each individual pillow wedge stays in it's own place.

Add Buttons

To finish off the papasan cushion, you can add buttons at various places in the seams to make it look good. This is not a requirement, but if you look at many store bought cushions, you'll see that this technique is used.
