How To Transfer A Design To A Wall Without A Projector
By Silverspoonmurals.com

If you have been scratching your head trying to figure out how to draw a proportionate and accurate picture on the wall so that you could paint it, well, here is everything you need to know to do the job with just a few handy items. As you probably know transferring your design to a wall without a projector will be a bit more time consuming, but here are the steps to make this happen:

You will use a grid pattern to enlarge your finished design.

1. First create your finished design

2. Overlay a square grid pattern on top of it in one inch squares. Each square box will be equal to one foot when transfered to the wall. The size of grid you use will depend on how much detail is in the drawing.

3. Once you have established your grid size, you can draw a grid pattern directly on the wall using something you can easily paint over like chalk, light pencil or charcoal pencil.

4. Once the grid is drawn, sketch the image inside the corresponding square from the original drawing to the enlarged drawing on the wall.

5. You can also create the enlarged image on large pieces of craft paper and newsprint. Then perforate the drawing with a pounce wheel. (You are basically outlining the large image by putting holes in the paper) Then tape up each piece of paper to the corresponding grid on the wall and use a chalk bag (a cotten cloth bag with powdered chalk in it.) Pounce the bag outlining the drawing on the wall. This will leave chalk marks on the wall with your design.
6. A unique alternative to using paper to trace or draw your design on, is to use bridal veil material or what is called tulle. Draw the outline of your design on the tulle with black marker, then tape it to the wall and go back over the lines with either pencil or marker. This eliminates the need for any transfer paper or a pounce wheel and powder and is reusable if you use washable marker. Just throw it in the wash and it's like brand new. The best part about using tulle instead of paper is that you don't have to worry about it tearing and the leangth is pretty unlimited.
Please Note:
  •  If you use this chalk pouncing method the drawing can be smeared easily when you remove the paper. So go over the chalk lines with a pencil. If you need to erase the chalk, baby wipes do a good job! Just for a fun side note, this is the way drawings were transferred hundreds of years ago. So you know it is a tried and true method.
  •  If you paint murals often you may wish to consider purchasing a projector. They range in price anywhere from $30.00 to the hundreds. For professional painters, you really need a quality piece of equipment, so don't skimp here. Ideally a projector that will work in some light is your best option, as you don't always have the ability to block out all light.
