How To Paint A Mural On Ceramic Tile
By SilverSpoonMurals.com

hand painted ceramic tile using a stencilPainting on ceramic tile is a great project for a kitchen backsplash or to add a decorative touch in the bathroom. Be creative! You can paint any subject to match your homes decor. You don't have to be able to paint a whole mural scene freehand. Stencils may be used to complete a simple but elegant design as seen in the photo on the right.

Supplies needed:

*soap and water (your surface must be clean before painting)

*PermEnamel Paint by Delta (you can find this paint in an art supply store such as Michaels)

*Air-Dry PermEnamel Surface Conditioner

*Topcoat: Clear Gloss or Clear Satin Glaze

*Drop cloth

*Assorted artist brushes or stencil brushes if you are stenciling

*Styorofoam plates for paint

*Water container and dry lint free cloth or towel

* Stencil (optional)

In order to start your project, make sure your surface is clean. If you are working on existing installed tile such as a kitchen backsplash or a shower, you may need to clean your surface using household cleaner. Then wash with soap and water. Rinse and dry surface before continuing.

Step 1. Apply PermEnamel Surface conditioner to area to be painted with a clean dry brush. Let the conditioner dry completely before starting to paint your design.

Step 2. Using your PermEnamel paint, apply paint in thin layers. The paint is very translucent and may require several coats. Allow the paint to dry between coats otherwise the paint will lift and the paint will look uneven in coats. When changing colors wet your brush and dry your brush before dipping the brush back into the paint. The paint must not be thinned with water. Paints may be mixed together to create new colors, but DO NOT THIN WITH WATER.

Step 3. Allow your painted tile to dry for at least one hour.

Step 4. Paint your tile with the topcoat with a clean dry brush. You can either use the clear gloss or the clear satin glaze.

Step 5. Allow your painted tile to cure for 10 days before washing.
