Sketch of Stone Wall Arch 1. Measure your wall and calculate how large the stones should be. Draw a sketch of how you want the wall to look, make sure it is to scale. A good rule of thumb is one inch to one foot.
2. Paint the wall the color you want the grout to be. An off-white color works well.
Tie a pencil with a string to create your arch. Mark a point in the middle of your arch. Your string should be half the width of your arch. Using a tack, tack the string down at the midpoint. Holding the pencil, draw your arch by creating a half circle.
3. Using a level, draw out your stones or grout lines. The stones can be any size but are typically longer than they are wide.
4. Tape over the grout lines with 1/4 inch painters tape.
5. (optional) Using a spackle knife and joint compound add texture to each block. Allow joint compound to dry over night.
6. Paint your stones using a natural sea sponge. Mix paints of varying colors, but keep colors close in range using off-white, yellow ochre, raw umber, and glaze, more glaze than paint. Vary placement of darks and lights on every stone. Using your sea sponge blot on the colors and then soften them with a softener brush. Paint in shadows with your script liner brush under each stone, either on the right or left side of each stone, take your light source into account when creating shadows.
7. Remove tape after the paint dries.
8. Paint with low-luster clearcoat paint or polyeurothane. Let this dry over night. Viola!
