How To Draw Santa Claus In Oil Pastels
By Robert Sloan

Santa Claus by Robert A. Sloan It's a little tougher to create a character like Santa Claus in oil pastels, you have to get the facial proportions right and there's also how to shade white beard, fur and hair. This article will make it easier breaking it down step by step.

Step 1Line sketch of Santa Claus          Copy my sketch of Santa Claus.

You can print it out and scale it up using Grid Method or an opaque projector. Use a light gray or light brown colored pencil for the final version if you don't want the lines to show much. Grid Method is simple and a good way to enlarge a sketch. Use a ruler to draw a grid of squares all the same size over the printout, say 1/2" squares. Then grid your drawing paper with one or two inch squares. Copy exactly what's in each square without paying attention to the other squares till you're done -- the proportions will be more accurate than freehand sketching.

Step 2          First Layer of Coloring

If you used pencil for your sketch, lighten the lines with a kneaded eraser. Stretch it, squish it down on your sketch and peel off repeatedly till your sketch is very pale but you can still see the lines. Don't rub hard. The lighter they get, the cleaner your flesh colors and light colors will be. Go over his face using Peach. Shade his white hair and beard exactly as shown, with curving strokes that follow the shapes of the hair. On the edges of the white furry trim on his cap, don't connect the lines but just do short angled lines next to each other to imply the edge. Do the irises of his eyes light blue, his lip peach, and his suit bright orange-red. This stage he's already recognizable and colored.

Step 3            Santa with Second Shading of solid Red

Go over all the red of his hat and coat with the redder red, the one closer to purplish red but still bright. Go over the highlight on the top of the hat with red-orange again so that it's fully covered. Sketch light thin accent lines of deep purple in the shadows of the white fur hat trim and the shadows of his beard and eyebrows, just where shown. Draw in the lines of his face again with pink and shade up the bottom of his cheek with pink. Add a little red orange to the darkest part of that shading. Use the sharp edge of a new black stick to do the line for eyelashes in black and dot the pupil into each blue eye. Shade his lips with pink and add a little red orange at the bottom of his lip for shading. He's looking better!

Step 4        Santa Finished with no background

Use the white stick to put highlights on the top of his nose, tip of his nose, and the tops of his cheeks under his eyes. Go over the shading on his cheek with white to blend it up and lighten it a little. Put a bit more pink on the ear. Scrape the pupil of the eye down to a smaller pupil using a nail file point. Use the darkest red or a red-purple to shade his coat as shown.
Step 5         Santa Claus with Background

You can do whatever you like with the background, but I colored mine in with metallic gold. If you have gold poster paint but no oil pastel, you can paint a gold background and it won't stick to the oil pastel as long as your paper is thoroughly covered at the edge.
